BASTILLE DAY

14 JULY IN PARIS : HISTORY, CELEBRATIONS & TIPS FOR ENJOYING

Every year, 14 July transforms Paris (and the rest of France) into a spectacular stage for remembrance, national pride and grandiose festivities. It is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in France’s culture and to experience Paris like never before.

But where does this emblematic date come from? What happens on that day? And how can you make the most of it if you’re in Paris? Follow the guide.

What exactly is 14 July?

Contrary to popular belief, 14 July commemorates two events :

  • the storming of the Bastille in July 14th 1789 – symbolic start of the French Revolution, which brought down its powerful monarchy.
  • the Fête de la Fédération in July 14th 1790 – a day of national unity celebrating the birth of the Republic.

In 1880, the French Republic chose to make this date the official National Day, celebrating both revolution and reconciliation.
