BAL DES POMPIERS : WHEN PARIS DANCES WITH FIREFIGHTERS
Every Summer, Fire Stations Turn into Dance Floors
If you’re in Paris on the night of 13 July, there’s one party you won’t want to miss — the Bal des Pompiers, or Firefighters’ Ball. Imagine stepping into a fire station and finding it transformed into a lively, joyful open-air dance party. Music, champagne, firefighters in uniform, and a whole lot of dancing — welcome to one of Paris’s most beloved traditions.
A Tradition Born in Montmartre
The story begins in 1937, when firefighters in Montmartre spontaneously opened their doors to locals on Bastille Day. What started as a simple gesture — sharing drinks and dancing with the neighbourhood — quickly became a hit. The festive spirit, friendly atmosphere, and chance to mingle with the firefighters caught on, and soon the tradition spread.
Today, the Bal des Pompiers is celebrated across almost every fire station in Paris and throughout France, drawing locals and tourists alike.
What to Expect at a Bal des Pompiers
🎶 Live Music & DJs
Many stations bring in local bands, DJs, or brass orchestras, creating a « guinguette » vibe — think open-air dance halls with a vintage twist.
🍾 Bubbles & Refreshments
Pop-up bars serve drinks and snacks all night long. It’s festive, casual, and very French.
💃 Dancing with Firefighters
Yes, the firefighters often join in the fun! Expect to see them twirling on the dance floor or pouring drinks behind the bar — it’s all part of the charm.
👨👩👧 Everyone’s Invited
Whether you’re a local family, a group of students, or a curious visitor, this is a truly intergenerational and inclusive event. No dress code, just bring your dancing shoes and good vibes.
How It Works
When?
The main night is 13 July, the eve of Bastille Day. Some stations also host events on 12 or 14 July.
Where?
Across Paris! Some of the most popular and atmospheric balls take place in:
- Caserne Rousseau (7th arrondissement)
- Caserne Sévigné (4th arrondissement, in the Marais)
- Caserne Blanche (9th arrondissement, near Montmartre)
Pro tip: these popular spots can get very crowded — arrive early or explore lesser-known barracks for a more local vibe
Entry?
Usually free or pay-what-you-wish. Donations are welcome and go toward the fire stations’ community activities or charity efforts.
Why You Should Go
The Bal des Pompiers is not just a party — it’s a piece of living French culture. It’s a night where barriers disappear, and Parisians from all walks of life come together to celebrate. The setting is unique, the mood infectious, and the memories unforgettable.
